To reach their full academic potential, children need a successful introduction to the LANGUAGE ARTS of reading, spelling, and writing, beginning on Day One of First Grade. "Ms K", a primary teacher of long experience, offers specific multisensory strategies for six to eight year olds who aren't quite "getting it". These strategies are based on the child's preferred learning style. Some children need better auditory reinforcement in the form of phonics and blending. Others respond best to the "whole word" approach of dictating and reading back their own stories. In both cases, spelling and handwriting are keyed to their reading instruction.
